Frequently asked questions
How many stamps should be on a loyalty card?
Most small businesses land between 6 and 10 stamps. 10 is the classic standard; 8 is a good balance if you want customers to hit the reward within a month of regular visits. The right number depends on your average ticket size and how much the reward costs you.
Is 10 stamps too many?
10 stamps can feel far away if your average customer only visits a few times a month. If the finish line is more than six weeks out, consider dropping to 8 stamps. Shorter cycles produce more dopamine hits and more habit formation.
What percentage of revenue should I spend on rewards?
Most loyalty programs give back between 5% and 15% of revenue as rewards. Below 5% and the reward doesn't feel meaningful. Above 15% and you're subsidizing customers you'd have kept anyway. 8–12% is the sweet spot for most small businesses.
Should I offer a harder-to-reach but bigger reward?
No. Research consistently shows that smaller, more frequent rewards outperform big distant ones for driving repeat visits. A customer who earns a free item every 10 visits stays engaged; one who earns $50 off after 50 visits quits.
